Be Still My Soul

As Nathan lay dying and in pain, we decided to put on some music. We chose a compilation of hymns. One hymn that played that morning was “Be Still My Soul”

Well – we are singing an arrangement of it on Sunday. During rehearsal I started singing and then the memory hit me part of the way in. The third verse, in particular was hard to sing. I actually left and composed myself and came back in. I had to do that one other time when we were preparing music for remembrance Sunday and Nathan was still alive. I don’t anticipate being able to sing the next remembrance Sunday when Nathan’s name will be read.

Here are the lyrics:

1. Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
leave to your God to order and provide;
in every change God faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2. Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
to guide the future, as in ages past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
the Christ who ruled them while he dwelt below.

3. Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow for forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

  1. Wow, that’s tough. Is it a good tough or a bad tough? I could see it going either way.

  2. Oh, my. That was the first song I ever memorized on the organ. I love that song. I can’t imagine being able to sit through choir rehearsal while we sung that.
