Middle of the Night

Luke posted about the great radio show taping (that is a link but links do not show up very well) we went to on Friday night.

I loved Loudon Wainwright III’s new song “Middle of the Night” Luke put it on his post, but I will repost with lyrics. As I am in the “middle of the night” currently, this song resonated with me.

Into this pitch darkness we’re hurled
Where there’s not a glimmer of light
It’s not the end of the world
It’s just middle of the night

And the blackest of flags is unfurled
In all this absence of light
It’s not the end of the world, good people
Merely the middle of the night

The middle of the night
That’s what this is
If death is the real test
This is just a quiz

When grey creeps through your window
It will be daylight
The end of this darkness
Is almost in sight

To a ball of fear you are curled
You’re holding on with all of your might
It’s not the end of the world, little sister
It’s just the middle of the night

In the maelstrom of your mind you are swirled
Almost down the drain but not quite
It’s not the end of the world, my brother
Rather the middle of the night

The middle of the night
When you fear everything
but the birds will awake soon
and you will hear them sing

You doubted you’d make it
not sure you’d survive
Now your dead tired
but you’re still alive

Around fate’s fickle finger we’re twirled
Small wonder we’re all so uptight
It’s no the end of the world, good people
Merely the middle of the night

It’s not the end of the world as we know it
it’s just the middle of the night

  1. The middle of the night is a cold, long, lonely time, but I like the touch of hope in this song. Kind of like seeing a few stars in the sky.

  2. That may be an instant classic. Reminds me of a cluster of songs, such as Tom Waits “Come On Up To The House.”

  3. Sometimes it seems that the night will never end. Sometimes when it does end, there is a dull, dreary day and then another night. But, eventually, we see the sunlight again, and hopefully, we are stronger because we have been through those nights. I hope that you can begin to see glimpses of that sunlight in those around you. What a song to hold onto–there is hope that things will be better. Love to all of you

  4. I was so grateful to find the lyrics to “Middle of the Night” which I heard on ETown on my way from Milwaukee to Madison, WI last night. It is such a beautiful song. I have been searching since I found your blog for the album/cd this song appears on, and I’ve got nothing. I’m hoping you could share, since you found the lyrics somewhere. Sorry if this is inappropriate blog etiquette…not a blogger. Just thought I’d say thanks and try to find out.

  5. Mo – after attending that taping I looked high and low for lyrics and the song with no luck. The song is not released. I found a NPR show at which he played the song and I decided to write out the lyrics by listening to it over and over. The etown podcast should be out in the next day or two – but meanwhile here is the link at which I found the song. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14925238I think it is about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way in.
